The apartment is situated in the heart of the old town of Gdańsk, in the tenement houses rebuilt after the war. It was created in the 80’ by adapting the attic areas of two neighbouring buildings and one of the rooms belonging to the apartment on the storey below. It spans over three levels, offers an unusual layout, amazing views over the old town and the docks and even a little roof terrace hidden behind the historical facades.
In 2017 the Clients decided to prepare the apartment for holiday renting.
During the redecoration the apartment has been cleaned to its basic state. The construction have been checked, the roof has been insulated and all the installations have been replaced. The layout has been improved. We’ve added an additional WC near the main entrance, separated a corridor from a main bedroom on the lowest level, where a big built-in cupboard for guests and for maintenance products have been installed and changed the kitchen window overlooking the terrace to comfortable fully glazed doors that brought much more light to the redesigned kitchen area and connected the interior with the terrace.
We wanted to expose wooden construction elements. The beams were cleaned and oiled. The pine floors has been disassembled, reconditioned in the local workshop and reused for the upper level of the apartment (kitchen, dining space and bedroom). Partly because of the wooden rustic elements we decided to keep the retro charm of the interior and mix minimalist custom-made furniture (built-in cabinets, dining table, kitchen) with vintage and design furnishings and objects. The owners found in the storage room two Polish classic chairs Śnieżnik 300-201 that started a Polish design theme thread and I have asked my partner, and the owner of the design shop Salonfähig.nl, to join the project and offer his insight knowledge. One of the beautiful Dutch additions are the chairs from the series No sign of design designed by Richard Hutten.
One of the unforeseen surprises of the project is the possibility to watch the wandering of the sun on the walls during the afternoons. Removing all the wooden wall and ceiling cladding and painting the apartment white brought much more natural light into the interiors and, because of wood radiance, a warm feeling.
