Garnizon is a new infill housing estate in the centre of Gdańsk. It uses the grounds and some historical buildings of the previous military compound. It’s a popular location for young and middle-aged professionals working in Tricity.
It’s the first an the bigger apartment of two owned by the same Client we had a possibility to work on. Both apartments were meant for a long-term rent. They were in shell and core condition that did not allow serious layout changes.
The main challenge of the project was the fact that the space immediately seen from the entrance was the kitchen. To make the initial experience welcoming we’ve chosen a rather dark wooden veneer for the kitchen furniture and placed the dining table in the middle. The dark veneer is repeated on the doors in the hall to give the space a tidy, uniform design. The basic palette was thus minimised to white, grey and brown, giving a neutral background to more varied textures and colours and a couple of Scandinavian abstract graphics bought in the local vintage store. As most often, we’ve chosen natural materials as they age more elegantly than synthetic equivalents and are easier to regenerate.
The only layout improvement was made in the bathroom. As the apartment lacked the storage room, the size of the bathroom was optimized (still keeping the comfortable walk-in shower and a big built-in cupboard) to separate a walk-in utility cupboard.
As in the other Garnizon project, all the appliances have been built in not to disturb the sight and the furnishing has been narrowed to a minimum to keep the space functional and easy to maintain.
The apartment has been checked after a year of renting and showed almost no signs of use.
